St. Thomas, USVI- The Education and Workforce Development Committee, chaired by Sen. Donna Frett-Gregory, will meet at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19 in the Earle B. Ottley Legislative Hall on St. Thomas. The committee will consider two bills and will hear testimony on issues pertinent to the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Sen. Frett-Gregory is encouraging the public to attend this meeting in person or via livestream at legvi.org.
The committee will hear testimony on Bill #33-0008, proposed by Sen. Dwayne M. DeGraff, regarding school monitors being prohibited from carrying metal batons while on school premises.
Testimony will also be heard on Bill #33-0019, proposed by Sen. Janelle K. Sarauw, an Act amending the VI Code regarding a shift of the academic school year. Commissioner of Education Racquel Berry-Benjamin has been invited to testify at 1 p.m. on school readiness for the 2019/2020 school year, including summer maintenance, classroom coverage, student data, the Virgin Islands Visual Data System (VIVIS) and an update on the status of federal grants expiring on Sept. 30. The Education and Workforce Development Committee will meet again, at a later date, to hear testimony from the Department of Labor regarding displaced workers due to the 2017 hurricanes.
